Huawei tests smartphone with own operating system, possibly for sale this year: Chinese state media
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is testing a smartphone equipped with Hongmeng, the company's self-developed operating system, which could potentially go on sale by the end of this year, Chinese state-media outlet Global Times reported.
The release of a Hongmeng-powered smartphone would mark a major step for China's Huawei, the world's second-biggest maker of smartphones,
The device will be priced at around 2,000 yuan ($288), the Global Times said on Sunday, citing unnamed sources. That will place the device toward the low-end segment of the smartphone market.
Huawei did not immediately comment on the report when contacted by Reuters on Monday.
Huawei executives have previously described Hongmeng as an operating system designed for internet-of-things products. Last month the company said the first major devices powered by Hongmeng would be its upcoming line of Honor-brand smart TVs.

BlackBerry had its own operating system for quite some time. When android and Apple began to dominate, developers abandoned it in droves.
How do you think things will work out for Huawei?
K6 hours ago
Maybe not Huawei, but somebody out there should make an OS better than Android. Even now I still have to close apps regularly to keep my phone from slowing down. iOS from Apple is good, its products are too expensive and too restrictive to me.

Chinese market is big enough to have it's own operating system.

Chinese will find a way faster if you push them. Like the space station, super computer, AI etc.

I'm surprised they didn't call it AnderRoids. I'm sure it will closely resemble Google's Android system to the point you can't tell them apart.

it will work, they were ready for this long time ago

Android is open source, so it's guaranteed that the Chinese operating system will be a modified version of that. China is great at copying things, but they're not so good at coming up with original, innovative products.

For all of the years that the US has been poking at Iran, it forced them to develop defensive capabilities and now they are equipped with assorted precision guided missiles that could create havoc for any nation trying to attack them. Now China will turn inward and develop even more sophisticated technology, they have already leaped ahead with 5G.

Good job huawei and also samsung. Thumbs up!

So did Huawei rename Android to Hongmeng then recompile ? I bet it take a whole hour to do that work

Remember Samsung's Tizen OS?

My Chinese is not that good but for the name of the OS being HongMeng, Hong means 'red'.

And another news indicates this "new" OS is still under development, Huawei actually hasn't set up a release date.

The Chinese are the very resilient people when push to the corner they will fight back. We tried to limit there access to many high techs (hardware, software, space, GPS, computer...) and they rolled over and developed their own's. Now that we don't want to license Android to them anymore then they come up with their own OS. Such restriction only hurts ourselves, financially and technologically.

I wonder how much Huawei is paying for these ads disguised as articles.

restrict it to domestic china market. We all outside of china want Android.
Marc55 minutes ago
That might go over in China, which of course it their biggest market, but it will not sell phones in the America or Europe

I'd get one just for curiosity purposes.

Hongmeng is going to show the world how really important Android is to people.

The US has been monopolising OS and social media for decades.. Is now time for Asians or the Europeans should have their own OS and social media platform too instead relying on just google Androids facebook or IOS.. Etc..

Well done Huawei, very well done indeed. All Chinese people, living either in China or outside China should unite for a better China future. Boycott US made products
Denis4 hours ago
I don't understand what does the US wants China to do? When China was poor and weak, you complain about China, and now when China is more prosper and stronger, you complain again. When China use your O/S system you complain, and now China came up her own O/S, you complain again.

If everyone in China use Huawei OS.. That is 1 billion users...
