New odour: India imports Rs 800 crore agarbattis from China
NEW DELHI: First, it were idols. Now, even agarbattis (incense sticks) that are used in worshipping deities are being imported from other countries, including China and Vietnam, data from Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has revealed.
The Rs 6,000-crore domestic agarbatti industry in 2018 imported around Rs 800 crore worth of incense sticks, including round bamboo sticks and raw agarbattis (sans perfume), which have led to a decline in the number of agarbatti projects and loss of employment in the sector.
“While the average import of round bamboo sticks from 2008 to 2011 was even less than Rs 1 crore, it went up to around Rs 250 crore in 2018 after the reduction in import duty,” said KVIC chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena.
Import of raw agarbatti surged in 2018, especially after import duty was reduced from 30% to 10% in 2011 and gradually brought down to 5% in 2018 due to the Indo-Asean Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Agarbattis are not a critical item to be imported at huge cost. Indian Government needs to re-look in this matter and stop importing it soon.

Why doesn''t the govt do something about this? 800cr is a huge amount and could very well lift the lives of many people in the country.

It is lopsided to invest and create units without ensuring availability of raw materials. Govt agencies should have promoted growing Bamboosa Tulda along with finding micro units for agarbattis. better late than never.

Sign of weak business acumen in India. We used to think that we cannot compete with China in manufacturing only. Now we need to import even staunchly Indian type products from China. Next will it be curry seasoning, saris, temple statues and trained English & Hindi language teachers?

shame ... that we are not even able to protect small scale industries of making agarbatti...

Minimise the use of agarbatti. Injurious to your lungs especially that of kids. If at all it is necessary then keep it in the balcony and avoid using indoors. Also make do with a single piece at a time.

Whenever one say of boycotting Chinese goods, we think of electronic goods and fire crackers etc, whereas this news shows how much our businessmen are dependent upon the Chinese products. Wish, they understand the implications and try to see for better alternatives withing country.
